PA – Polyamide (Nylon)
Polyamide (PA), also known as nylon, is one of the most widely used engineering plastics. The most common types are PA6 and PA66. It is characterized by high mechanical strength, excellent wear resistance, and good sliding properties. Ideal for machine parts, gears, bearings, bushings, and automotive components. Polyamide absorbs moisture, which affects its mechanical properties and dimensional stability – this property must be considered during design.
Advantages
- High mechanical strength
- High toughness
- Excellent wear resistance
- Low coefficient of friction
- Good fatigue resistance
- Good chemical resistance to oils and greases
- Good heat resistance
- Good electrical insulation
- Possibility of high glass fiber filling
Disadvantages
- High water absorption
- Poorer dimensional stability in humid environments
- UV sensitivity without stabilization
- Higher price than commodity plastics
- Requires drying before processing
